7 acne myths not worth believing
If you suffer from acne, and go looking for its treatment options, you are sure to come across many acne myths. Here is a list of the most common acne myths, and why they are myths and false, and not a reality.

1.The first myth states that frequent washing of your face helps clear acne. However this isn’t exactly true as it is not dirt that causes acne. Pores don’t get clogged with dirt, but by oil and secretion of sebum.

In fact, instead of treating acne, frequent washing may irritate skin pores and make them clogged. Moreover, frequent use of a washcloth can lead to more irritation. A better alternative is to gently wash your face with your hands twice a day.

2.Secondly, it is said that stress leads to acne. Though this may be partly right, the right acne treatment regimen, can fight any bout of stress related acne.

3.The third myth is that masturbation and sex leads to acne. This myth has been around since the 17th century and was started mainly with the intention of dissuading young people from having premarital sex, and nothing else.

4.The fourth myth is that the sun helps in treating acne. Though tans temporarily treat acne, staying for long periods in the sun leads to dry and irritated skin. This consequently leads to an increase in acne breakouts.

When in the sun, use sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15, and which says noncomedogenic so that there is no clogging of pores.

5.It is said that diet and acne are interconnected. This myth was started mainly because people in some areas suffer more from acne while people from other reasons don’t. Though it may not be advisable to you to eat lots of high fat and sugary food or chocolate as it leads to acne, it may not have an effect on someone else. 
6.The sixth popular myth is that popping pimples helps in getting rid of pimples. However though it may make the problem seem less noticeable for a temporary period, it can make acne stay around longer. In fact, by squeezing pimples, you push bacteria, oil and dead skin cells into the skin to cause more swelling and scars.

7.Last, but not least, it is said that you shouldn’t wear makeup if you want clear skin. This is not true. In fact, as long as you use nonacnegenic or noncomedogenic cosmetics, you needn’t worry about breakouts. However sometimes you may see some skin irritation after using these products; in such case, stop using it and consult your doctor.

Concealers and creams also come with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to help you fight acne. However if you suffer from severe acne, its better to consult your doctor or dermatologist for suggestions on the best cosmetics to use.

Now you see why these myths are called acne myths. Though they may look to be true, once you see the real picture, you realize why they are called acne myths and not acne facts.
