Millions of people all across the world suffer from acne at one time in their life or another, it seems like teenagers tend to suffer more from acne than adults. However adults\also suffer from acne. Some of them suffer from mild to severe acne cases that may appear only on the face or on the whole body and scalp too. With an understanding of the various acne symptoms, it is possible to use the right treatment to treat the condition much faster.

Inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne

There are basically two types of acne; inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne. In case of the wider type of non-inflammatory acne, its symptoms are only a few whiteheads and blackheads that appear on the face. This form of acne is usually treatable using some simple, non-prescriptive medication.

In case of inflammatory acne, as the name suggests, its whiteheads get inflamed to cause red pimples and pustules. The acne symptoms in this severe form of acne are pitting scars on the neck, chest, face and back and require prescription medication or surgery for treatment.

Broader classification of acne

Besides being classified as inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne, acne is also classified based on its different levels of severity.

1. In case of pimples, you find skin swellings where the red spots keep returning. These swellings are filled with pus and found on the shoulders, back, chest, neck and face.

1. The symptoms of blackheads are dark spots on the skin that have centric open pores. The presence of the skin compound melanin makes blackheads dark in color; however this acne is not caused by the accumulation of dirt and dust. It is the plugging of dead skin, dried sebum and hair cells that cause blackheads.

1. The acne symptoms for pustules, which are the secondary stages of whiteheads and blackheads are pus filled red swellings.

1. Whiteheads are bulged spots found under the skin and have no openings. These bumps are skin colored, or white in color and thus the name.

1. The large, inflamed and fluid filled lumps found under the skin are called cysts that usually require medical attention.

Sometimes severe cases of acne have symptoms that are similar to the symptoms of other diseases. Acne Rosacea also has pustules and papules that however require different types of treatments. Unlike acne, it is the surrounding tissue that inflames and infects these lesions.
