Acne Scar Treatments

Acne scars were very difficult to treat in the earlier times. But over the past few years, there have been many improvements in the treatment techniques and procedures and acne scars can now finally be treated. While treating acne scars, it is important that you understand the realistic ways of treatment. Not all acne scars can be erased completely. But remarkable improvements can definitely be noted with proper combination treatment options.

Some of the common acne scar treatment options are noted below

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments are the best now and can actually remove your scars. These treatment options are available in two different forms: ablative lasers and non-ablative lasers. Ablative lasers can resurface your skin by actually removing the outer layers of the skin, while non-ablative lasers can create some changes in the skin’s dermis layer without causing any damage to the surface of the skin. This option is often known as lunchtime lasers as they are the speediest methods of treatment. Ablative laser treatment however, requires more downtime is compared to non-ablative lasers. Laser treatment can also help in treating similar skin conditions in a very short span of time.

Punch Excision, Punch Grafting and Punch Elevation

Punch techniques are used for treating ice pick and similar other scars. A tiny punch tool that looks almost like a circular cutter is used for cutting the scarred part of the skin. After excision of the scar, the skin is treated and closed. As a result of the treatment procedure, a small scar might be seen, but would be less prominent than the acne scar. These scars will disappear over time.

After excision of the skin, a grafting procedure is often needed for filling the void. Punch graft can also leave scars, but they fade over time.

For deeper scars, punch elevation techniques are used. This is more of a critical procedure and involves the removal of the base scar. The skin is then elevated by the dermatologist, to the actual surface and some intricate techniques are used.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is carried out by the dermatologist and requires local anesthesia. With the use of a fast rotating wire brush, the uppermost skin layers are abraded. This is regarded as one of the best treatment options for acne.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion and dermabrasion is not the same thing; the former is a cosmetic technique performed in the spas and also by dermatologists in their clinic. The procedure involves the use of a machine that can be used for discharging fine crystals of aluminum oxide with the help of a tube in our skin. This method requires quite a few sessions for permanent solutions. Microdermabrasion can treat hyper pigmentation as well.

Steroids

Steroid treatments can be used for treating acne scars as well. Though steroids tend to be very strong, but can effectively treat the scars. Steroids can also be injected into the skin for better results. Corticosteroid creams are used for treating hypertrophic scars.

You must not prick or squeeze the acne formed; that leads to scars. However, in some cases, scars just appear as a part of the healing process. You can try any of these treatment options under the supervision of a reputed dermatologist.
