Acne is a common skin condition from which nearly 70% of teens suffer. Because it tends to affect most of the visible part of the body, these youngsters suffer from endless embarrassment which often throws them into deep Acne Mythsdepression. Though there are plenty of medical, over the counter, herbal and home remedies available now for acne treatment, there are still some stubborn myths which are settled in the minds of sufferers as well as their care givers. No matter how well the reputed dermatologist may try to treat your acne or how expensive your chosen over the counter product is, unless you free your mind of the myths which surround acne, you can never get the best out of any treatment. In fact, your believing in these myths could even jeopardize the treatment procedure.

This article is aimed at clearing some of the popular myths regarding acne:

Myth #1: Drink a lot of water and your acne would disappear: While it is true that when the skin is dehydrated beyond a point the skin is unable to shed the dead skin cells and therefore it involuntarily helps in clogging the skin pores. But if you drink a lot of water, this alone can not help you to get rid of acne. This is because acne is caused by over-secretion of sebum which results in oily skin which in turn attracts a particular type of bacteria which causes acne. Of course if you drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day your body would remain health, but your acne can not disappear.

Myth# 2: Chocolates cause acne: Let us remember one thing that no particular food be it chocolates, French fries, soda or chips can cause acne since the cause of acne is due to overtly oily skin where the skin dead cells can not be shed. So it is important to note that no food including chocolates can make your skin produce oil in excess of what it is already producing. Research has shown that chocolates or oily and greasy foods do not cause acne but acne is caused when the body is going through some hormonal changes and the body is prone to oily skin.

Myth# 3: Acne is an incurable disease: This is surely not true. People are known to have got rid of acne even during their teens when it is at its worst. All you need to do is to eat and live healthy, have the right products for your skin, do regular exercises and avoid too much stress. Do not rub or scrub your acne as it gets worse with such treatment. Always use gentle products on the acne affected areas and acne can of course get cured. There is plenty of medication also available which can be prescribed only by a professional dermatologist – so if the situation is gradually getting out of control, it is always prudent to consult a doctor before the condition gets worse.
