  • What causes acne?

The area soon becomes the breeding ground for harmful bacterial Hormonal changes also cause acne, especially during the age when the person is attaining puberty. Thus bacteria and hormones are the two main reasons behind the formation of acne.




  • What are the different types of acne?

There are several types of acne. For example, when the clogged pores are larger, it results in a black head which are flat and small with a dark circle in the middle. The center turns black as it is touch with air. When the pores are small, it results in a whitehead, which are covered with skin and look like closed bumps which has the same color as your skin. Then there is cystic acne, which is a big swelling located under the skin which can be inflamed and infected. This is a case of severe acne and generally affects girls and boys between 10 and 13 years of age, or when puberty begins. In general, there are mild, moderate and severe types of acne.


  • Who gets affected by acne?Acne illustration

Acne generally affects people in their teens. When some one is affected by acne, it lasts for about 5 to 10 years. Incidentally only 20% of adults are affected by acne. Though acne affects girls more than boys, the boys are more prone to be affected with more severe types of acne. People with oily skin are more prone to acne than others.


  • Does acne affect only the face?

While most cases of acne are seen on the face, other areas like neck, arms, back, on the scalp, under arms, chest, genital area, buttocks and even legs have been seen to be affected by acne.


  • I have heard that acne is caused by diet and hygiene. Is it true?

No these are nothing but a few of the many myths surrounding acne. Scientific studies have shown that acne can not be caused by these things but can be aggravated by some foods and unhygienic personal habits. Sometimes acne could also be hereditary.


  • Can acne be treated effectively?

Yes today there are plenty of pills, creams and lotions available which are used effective in the treatment of acne. There are some effective home remedies too which people have used successfully to treat acne.


  • Can you suggest some home remedies?

To treat acne it is best to consult a doctor first. However some people apply egg white on the skin and then wash it off after 20 minutes. This has been effective for many people. However, it is always a good idea to consult a dermatologist who can recommend the perfect therapy option, depending on your specific condition.
