These medications mostly include topical treatment options and oral medicines. These medications are meant for treating the root cause of acne, reducing oil production and effectively treating the infection. These treatments can also be implemented for reducing acne scars.

Some of the commonly used prescription treatments for acne are antibiotics, laser and light treatments, isotretinoin and several cosmetic procedures. For treating mild acne, topical treatments are the best. But there are several lotions that can be considered, lets have have a look:

  • Topical Treatments: Acne lotions are the best topical treatments. These lotions can remove the excess oil, kill the germs and bacteria and also promote the sloughing of the dead cells of your skin. Though there are many over-the-counter topical agents for treating acne, but all of them don’t really work. The stronger topical creams can be availed with prescriptions only. Tretinoin (Retin-A, Avita, Reniva), adapalene (Differin) etc. are some of the commonly used prescribed ointments. They can actually promote the turnover of the cells and prevent hair follicles from plugging. Topical antibiotics are also available in the market and can be used for killing excess bacteria from the skin. Sometimes, a combination of few products cans give better results.

  • Isotretinoin: For deeper cysts and acne, just antibiotics might not work well. Isotretinoin (Accutane) is a very powerful medicine and can treat acne scars easily. This medicine can be used only when the acne is in its extreme form and the scars are too rigid to be treated. This drug, however, cannot be taken by pregnant ladies as it can cause birth defects.

  • Antibiotics: Antibiotics are used for moderate to severe forms of acne. These drugs are given to reduce the bacteria and combat inflammation. These antibiotics must be used for months for better results and also in combination with one or more topical products.

  • Oral Contraceptives: Oral contraceptives, used in combination with ethinyl estradiol (Ortho-Cyclen, Ortho Tri-Cyclen) and norgestimate can actually improve the conditions of acne in females. However, as these drugs are contraceptives, some side effects might be noted and therefore one must consult with a doctor before taking these drugs.

  • Cosmetic Procedures: Microdermabrasion and chemical peels are very useful in keeping the acne under control. Some of the cosmetic procedures that have been used for lessening the appearance of sunburns, fine lines and other facial scars traditionally can now be effectively used for treating acne.
